ELECTION TERMINOLOGY (FAQs)
  • Registered Voters
All individuals registered by the voter registration deadline.
  • Turnout Calculation
Turnout calculation is ballots cast divided by total registered voters.
  • Nonpartisan Partisan (Primaries)
This is not an actual precinct. This includes countywide partisan results for voters without a political party affiliation who requested a partisan ballot. For more information, please visit our Nonpartisan Voting in Primaries page.
  • Update Frequency
Results will begin posting at 8:00 PM CT / 7:00 PM MT on election night and will be updated every 5 minutes as counties report new results. The initial results will typically be early voting results. As counties add results, precincts will be labeled as “Partially” reporting. When a county finishes reporting for the night, its precincts will be labeled as “Fully” reported. Updates will pause once all counties have finished reporting for election night. Provisional ballots and early voting ballots received on election day may still be counted afterward. Unofficial results will be updated again after election night, usually on Fridays.
  • Unofficial vs Official results
The results displayed on Election Night are unofficial. Once the 93 County Canvass Boards and the Nebraska Board of State Canvassers canvass and certify the election results, the official results will be available on our website. Final results will be on the election night reporting website by June 8, pending recounts. Please visit SOS Elections for the official, certified results.
  • Write-ins
Write-in results are not shown on the election night reporting website. They are only counted if the candidate filed a write-in affidavit in advance. Final write-in totals are included in the official results after county and state canvassing. If write-in totals make up less than 5% of the total and do not affect the outcome, they may be grouped together and reported as a single total (called “scattering”).
  • Post-Election Audits
The day after the election, random precincts are selected by the state for a hand count audit. All ballots from those precincts are counted by hand for 3 contests (e.g., Governor). The hand counted results are compared to the machine totals.
